Post Holiday Update - What's to come in 2015

The Holiday season has come and gone, and the New Year starts at midnight tomorrow.
An update seemed in order.

For your viewing pleasure, a couple more finished pieces for this year's BIG 500 show. It hangs until January 11th, 2015, in Portland, OR and I believe you may still be able to get a piece or two of my work for next to nothing. At least...that was what was hanging at the end of opening night
(that could have changed by now).

I created ten new illustrations for the show, but, due to technical difficulties and tight deadlines, I was only able to get 7 good scans. So that's kinda lame for both you and me... But, trust me you get to see the best works featured in this year's show.

The New Year holds a wealth of new opportunity and potential.
I'm hard at work on my first 45-50 page comic story. I hope to have everything press worthy and in print later in 2015. To start this year, I'll be exhibiting and tabling at comic conventions for the first time behind my own table, my own name. It's exciting and intimidating to be sure. I'm hoping to use every opportunity to steer my small illustration business to bigger and better things.

I'm also working hard at creating my own work, as well as client work, that I can feature and show off here and on my other various web portfolio's. This includes a quarterly e-mail and promo mailer to prospective clients throughout a variety of industries. It will take time for these efforts to bear fruit. I know how long it can be before the foot in the door becomes an open door. I'm patient...

For now... enjoy the new work...Have a safe New Year's Eve, and get back to work...

Cheers

The Cthuttle Bug : Classification of Creatures in the Lands of Nite-Night

It's amazing how a simple line drawing can drag you into a new story.
I'm glad this one turned out the way I'd envisioned.
It's forcing me to refine a new aesthetic, and start turning the wheels in a new world.
Hope you like it!

Enjoy the rest or your week

Linework for the BIG 500

Apologies for the lack of updated work on Monday. To make up for that, I'm giving you a quick view of two rough drawings for this year's BIG 500 show. Each will look different when fully done, but this one's for all the process junkies out there.

Enjoy the rest of your week

The New Comic - Better Pages

With October getting into gear, fall/winter are shaking up to be busy. I'm working on ten new original illustrations for the annual BIG 500 show here in Portland, creating new pages for a comic, and making a more concerted effort at marketing myself toward my dream clients.

The comic I will have completed and printed by next year's Emerald City Comicon. The BIG 500 illustrations will be complete and hanging in the People's Art Gallery around the middle of December. While the marketing is quarterly and a bit more of a grind than expected. It has been a long time coming, and I hope to see the fruits of my labors soon.

Client work is "meh"...but I refuse to complain. All good things in time.

Enjoy your week

Things to Come

Here's a bit of a teaser for the new comic I'm working on. With the return of fall weather, and the mad rush for indoor projects, I'll be posting small updates on a weekly basis. Until I can get a better scan, you'll have to deal with a blurry page still in progress. The blue pencil is fun to work with on the bristol, so far so good.  Enjoy the rest of your week.

Icon show at People's Art Gallery in Portland

Thought I'd follow that update with a quick look at new work I made for a local show hanging now in Portland. The top piece is Hayao Miyazaki, and the bottom is Neil Gaiman. Both tremendous influences on my aesthetic, as well as being great inspirations.

Fall Update and Work in Progress

Days are turning colder and a little more moist...Fall is rolling in, and I'm creating new work. It starts with the 45 page, all ages comic I'm creating. I expect to share process shots in the weeks to come. I'm also making ten original pieces for this year's annual BIG 500 show here in Portland. All the while, creating work for  clients, and finishing work that entices new ones. For now enjoy a piece I'm finishing up in the coming week...I'll show you what it looks like in a few days.

I've also updated my website. With new additions to available galleries. Drop in and see whats new if you want. I hope you all enjoy your week.

Professor Elemental - Anthology Issue 3

Following closely on the heels of the Ming Qi project, I had a looming deadline for the 2014 Professor Elemental anthology. For those out of the loop, Professor Elemental is a bit of a English, steam-punk, Hip Hop artist who frequents comic conventions and is featured in other media.

I completed this nine page short in about 3 months time. I was the sole illustrator/designer on the project. While I'm happy with how the final product turned out, I pretty much sequestered myself from most human interaction to get it done on time. I'm not complaining though. I had trouble not posting all nine pages, but feel the work above is the best from this story. I can't wait to get my issues. Hope you enjoy the work.

Ming Qi - Character Design

Being busy is a good thing. The only disadvantage to working on projects that span months is not being able to share material until everything is delivered and officially "finished".

With that being said, I'll forgo the apologies for the lack of posts, and give you a sense of time spent in the last few months.

These pieces are highlights from a Character Design package I created for Adrian Ramirez, a talented comic writer out of Seattle. The script is a bit of a Post civil war, steam-punk, samurai epic that takes place on the West Coast of North America. This first phase was based around creating a "style" book for the world and it's main players.

When all was said and done, Adrian ended up with a 40 page book full of photo reference from the period, character reference photos, and finished character sheets (as you see above). It was an involved endeavor, to be sure, but I'm pleased with the end results and happy to share them with you. Enjoy your week!
